Description:
Many applications such as problems in fracture mechanics or image segmentation require a description by functions with discontinuiuties over hypersurfaces. Hence, they cannot be formulated within a Sobolev space. Instead these problems are typically phrased within the class of functions of bounded variation. In this course we will study the properties of functions of bounded variation (compactness, embeddings, structural properties,...) and present applications to variational problems.
